A Pteranodon Soaring Through a Classic Blue and White Sky
Wings spread wide, a pteranodon rides the wind across this little plate, past swirling gusts and a rolling bank of clouds. Fine ridges radiate around the rim like the folds of a fan. This is Hiyakuryu (飛躍竜), the "leaping" dinosaur, one of the Edokko Dinosaur (江戸っ子恐竜) mame plates from Awasaka, a range that tucks playful prehistoric creatures into traditional Japanese patterns. Each plate is made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramics region. Collect the other Edokko Dinosaur mame plates to build a set where every dish has a different creature.
Product Features:
- Soaring pteranodon design: a pteranodon with outstretched wings glides through swirling wind lines above a bank of clouds and waves.
- Ridged rim: fine radial ridges around the rim catch the light and give a pleasing texture. It is the only plate in the series with this finish.
- Classic indigo on white: drawn in deep blue on white porcelain in the spirit of traditional Japanese sometsuke ware, framed by thin blue lines.
- A symbol of moving up: hiyaku means a great leap forward, so this plate makes a thoughtful little gift for a graduation, new job or promotion.
- Mame plate size: at 9cm across, it is the classic Japanese mamezara for soy sauce, wasabi, pickles, dipping sauces, a single wagashi or a few chocolates.
- Collectible series: eight Edokko Dinosaur mame plates share the same size, each with a different creature and pattern.
- Easy care: dishwasher safe and suitable for microwave reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mame plate?
A mame plate (mamezara, 豆皿) is a very small Japanese dish, usually around 7 to 10cm wide. "Mame" means bean, a nod to its tiny size. Mame plates hold soy sauce, condiments, pickles and sweets, and many people collect them for their endless variety of patterns.
Is a pteranodon a dinosaur?
Not quite. Pteranodon was a pterosaur, a flying reptile that lived alongside the dinosaurs but belonged to a separate group. It's a fun fact for young dinosaur fans, and it makes this plate the only flyer among the eight Edokko Dinosaur mame plates.
What does Hiyakuryu mean?
Hiyaku (飛躍) means to leap or soar, often used for a big step forward in life, and "ryu" (竜) appears in Japanese names for prehistoric creatures. Together, Hiyakuryu is the "leaping dinosaur", a cheerful wish for success.
What is Mino ware?
Mino ware (Mino-yaki, 美濃焼) is pottery and porcelain made in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. With more than 1,300 years of history, it is Japan's largest ceramics-producing area and is known for practical, well-made tableware in a wide variety of styles.
