A Blue Wave Mame Plate With a Sleepy Triceratops

Seigaiha, the overlapping "blue sea waves" pattern, is one of Japan's best-loved designs, a symbol of calm and lasting good fortune. On this little plate, a triceratops has curled up for a nap on a winding band of those waves, among little pine trees. This is Seikairyu (青海竜), the "blue sea dinosaur", one of the Edokko Dinosaur (江戸っ子恐竜) mame plates from Awasaka, a range that tucks playful dinosaurs into traditional Japanese patterns. Each plate is made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramics region. Collect the other Edokko Dinosaur mame plates to build a set where every dish has a different dinosaur.

Product Features:

  • Sleepy triceratops design: a three-horned triceratops dozes on top of a band of seigaiha waves that winds across the plate, surrounded by pine trees.
  • Blue with green accents: indigo blue on white porcelain, with soft green on the pine needles and plenty of white space that suits both Japanese and modern tables.
  • Lucky seigaiha pattern: the wave motif has stood for peace and good fortune in Japan for centuries, and pine trees for long life.
  • Mame plate size: at 9cm across, it is the classic Japanese mamezara for soy sauce, wasabi, pickles, dipping sauces, a single wagashi or a few chocolates.
  • Collectible series: every Edokko Dinosaur mame plate is the same size with a different dinosaur and pattern, so they mix and match on the table.
  • Handy beyond the table: a neat tray for rings, earrings, tea bags or a spoon rest.
  • Easy care: dishwasher safe and suitable for microwave reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mame plate?

A mame plate (mamezara, 豆皿) is a very small Japanese dish, usually around 7 to 10cm wide. "Mame" means bean, a nod to its tiny size. Mame plates hold soy sauce, condiments, pickles and sweets, and many people collect them for their endless variety of patterns.

What is the seigaiha pattern?

Seigaiha (青海波) means "blue sea waves". Its overlapping arcs represent a calm, endless sea and carry wishes for peace and a long, steady life. It appears on Japanese kimono, textiles and ceramics, and gives this plate its name, Seikairyu.

What is Mino ware?

Mino ware (Mino-yaki, 美濃焼) is pottery and porcelain made in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. With more than 1,300 years of history, it is Japan's largest ceramics-producing area and is known for practical, well-made tableware in a wide variety of styles.

Does it make a good gift?

Yes. It is a small, affordable Made in Japan gift for dinosaur fans, Japanese food lovers and plate collectors. Pair two or more different designs for a collectible set, or add one to a larger Japanese tableware gift.
