A Fire-Breathing Dinosaur in Classic Japanese Indigo
A little spotted dinosaur throws its head back and breathes out a great sweep of blue flame. Look closely and the flame is made of kikkō, the traditional Japanese tortoiseshell pattern, with a white plum blossom in every hexagon. This is Blue Flame (青炎竜), one of the Edokko Dinosaur (江戸っ子恐竜) mame plates from Awasaka, a range that tucks playful dinosaurs into traditional Japanese patterns. Each plate is made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramics region. Pair it with its twin, the Red Flame plate, or collect all eight designs.
Product Features:
- Fire-breathing dinosaur: a cheerful spotted dinosaur, jaws wide open, breathes a crescent of flame that curves around the plate.
- Lucky kikkō pattern: the flame is filled with a tortoiseshell hexagon pattern, a Japanese symbol of long life, with a plum blossom inside each hexagon.
- Classic indigo on white: a deep blue design on white porcelain in the spirit of traditional Japanese sometsuke ware, finished with a dark speckled rim.
- Twin design: the Red Flame plate shows the same dinosaur in red, so the two make a matching pair.
- Mame plate size: at 9cm across, it is the classic Japanese mamezara for soy sauce, wasabi, pickles, dipping sauces, a single wagashi or a few chocolates.
- Collectible series: eight Edokko Dinosaur mame plates share the same size, each with a different dinosaur and pattern.
- Easy care: dishwasher safe and suitable for microwave reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mame plate?
A mame plate (mamezara, 豆皿) is a very small Japanese dish, usually around 7 to 10cm wide. "Mame" means bean, a nod to its tiny size. Mame plates hold soy sauce, condiments, pickles and sweets, and many people collect them for their endless variety of patterns.
What is the difference between the Red Flame and Blue Flame plates?
Only the colour. Both show the same fire-breathing dinosaur and kikkō flame, one in warm red and one in deep indigo. Together they make a fun pair for two people, or a red and blue set for siblings.
What is the kikkō pattern?
Kikkō (亀甲) is a hexagon pattern based on the shell of a tortoise. In Japan the tortoise is said to live for ten thousand years, so kikkō is a traditional wish for long life and good fortune, often seen on kimono, lacquerware and celebration tableware.
What is Mino ware?
Mino ware (Mino-yaki, 美濃焼) is pottery and porcelain made in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. With more than 1,300 years of history, it is Japan's largest ceramics-producing area and is known for practical, well-made tableware in a wide variety of styles.
