In February 2020, Mitsubishi Pencil Co. — the 1887-founded Japanese house behind Uni-ball, Jetstream and Kuru Toga — released a quiet little pen that quietly changed an entire category. The Uni-ball One reformulated gel ink so the pigment particles sat on top of the paper fibres instead of sinking into them. Suddenly, blacks looked black. Colours looked alive. Lines came out crisp enough to scan and photograph beautifully. A study at Ritsumeikan University in Japan even found students who reviewed notes written with a Uni-ball One recalled the information better than students reading conventional ink.
