The Pen That Changed Writing Forever
In 1963, in a Tokyo factory still finding its feet in postwar Japan, an inventor named Yukio Horie quietly released a pen unlike anything the world had seen. He called it the Sign Pen. It wasn't a ballpoint, not a fountain pen, not a marker — it was something new entirely: a fibre-tipped pen, with a soft acrylic point inspired by the centuries-old Japanese calligraphy brush, fed by rich water-based ink that flowed onto the page with brush-like warmth and pen-like precision.
It was almost overlooked. Pentel gave samples away free at a Chicago trade fair because they weren't allowed to sell. One of those samples ended up with US President Lyndon B. Johnson, who promptly ordered 24 dozen. Pentel's factories couldn't keep up. By 1966, the Sign Pen had been adopted by NASA and travelled into orbit on the Gemini space mission. Over two billion units have been sold since.
Sixty-plus years later, the Pentel Sign Pen S520 is still made in Japan, still produced to the same standard, and still recognised the moment you pick one up. The shape is unmistakable. The slim plastic barrel is colour-matched to its ink — a small but characteristic detail of Japanese stationery design — and the cap snaps closed with a satisfying click. The line is rich, confident, and a little brush-like — equally at home outlining illustrations, lettering a journal, marking up a book, or signing the back of a card.
Why Artists, Designers and Writers Keep Coming Back
There's a reason the S520 has held its place on so many studio desks, school benches, and writing nooks for so long. The 2 mm bullet felt tip lays down a clean 1 mm line — fine enough for confident writing and journalling, broad enough to feel expressive when you draw. Soft enough to add subtle character to a line under pressure, firm enough to hold a clean edge, and durable enough to outlast far more expensive pens. The water-based ink is fast-drying, richly pigmented, and — unlike oil-based markers — layers beautifully under watercolour and other wet media. There's no smudge, no bleed-through on most papers, and no fade over time.
The S520 sits in a category of one. It's not a fineliner. It's not a brush pen. It's not a marker. It's the original fibre-tipped pen — a Japanese invention so successful that it shaped the entire global category that followed.
Five Carefully Chosen Colours, Sourced Direct from Japan
Pentel produces the S520 in twelve water-based colours in Japan, each one developed and refined over decades of ink formulation. SHOPPUROO™ has selected five — Black, Red, Green, Sky Blue and Pink — the colours we believe represent the S520 best for Australian writers, illustrators, journallers and daily-use shoppers. Each one is sourced through our Japanese supply channels in the Japan-domestic spec, the same pen sold in Tokyo stationery shops.
Safe, Long-Lasting, and Direct from Japan
Every S520 we stock is sourced direct from Japan and ships to you in its Japan-domestic packaging, the same as you'd find on a stationery shelf in Tokyo or Kyoto. The ink is ACMI AP-certified non-toxic and lead-free, which is why the Sign Pen has been trusted in classrooms, art rooms and family homes for generations. With approximately 900 metres of writing distance per pen, a single S520 will see you through months of daily journalling, drawing or notes.
