A Mt Fuji Mame Plate With a Dinosaur Resting at Its Foot
Snowy Mt Fuji rises against a deep indigo sky, and below it a long-necked dinosaur lies stretched out, its spotted, humped back a perfect echo of the mountain. This is Fujiryu (富士竜), the "Mt Fuji dinosaur", one of the Edokko Dinosaur (江戸っ子恐竜) mame plates from Awasaka, a range that tucks playful dinosaurs into traditional Japanese patterns. Each plate is made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramics region. Collect the other Edokko Dinosaur mame plates to build a set where every dish has a different dinosaur.
Product Features:
- Mt Fuji dinosaur design: a long-necked dinosaur rests beneath Mt Fuji, its back shaped just like the mountain above.
- Asanoha pattern: a band of asanoha (hemp leaf), a traditional Japanese motif for healthy growth, runs along the bottom of the scene.
- Deep indigo finish: rich ai-iro blue sky and a softly shaded indigo rim, framed by a clean white ring, with a few little star-like blossoms.
- Mame plate size: at 9cm across, it is the classic Japanese mamezara for soy sauce, wasabi, pickles, dipping sauces, a single wagashi or a few chocolates.
- Collectible series: every Edokko Dinosaur mame plate is the same size with a different dinosaur and pattern, so they mix and match on the table.
- Handy beyond the table: a neat tray for rings, earrings, tea bags or a spoon rest.
- Easy care: dishwasher safe and suitable for microwave reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mame plate?
A mame plate (mamezara, 豆皿) is a very small Japanese dish, usually around 7 to 10cm wide. "Mame" means bean, a nod to its tiny size. Mame plates hold soy sauce, condiments, pickles and sweets, and many people collect them for their endless variety of patterns.
Why is Mt Fuji a lucky symbol in Japan?
Mt Fuji is Japan's highest and most sacred mountain. It stands for strength, endurance and good fortune, and seeing Fuji in the first dream of the New Year is said to bring luck for the year ahead. That makes Fuji designs a popular gift in Japan.
What is the asanoha pattern?
Asanoha (麻の葉) is a geometric hemp leaf pattern. Hemp grows tall and straight very quickly, so the motif carries wishes for healthy growth and was traditionally used on children's clothing in Japan.
What is Mino ware?
Mino ware (Mino-yaki, 美濃焼) is pottery and porcelain made in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. With more than 1,300 years of history, it is Japan's largest ceramics-producing area and is known for practical, well-made tableware in a wide variety of styles.
