A Classic Ko-Imari Ramen Bowl, With Three Dinosaurs Hiding in the Pattern

Blue pine trees, rolling waves and quiet landscapes, framed by panels of red lattice and blossom. At first glance this flared bowl looks like a piece of antique Ko-Imari porcelain. Look again and you will find three different dinosaurs wandering through the scenery. This is Edokko Dinosaur (江戸っ子恐竜), a range from Awasaka that tucks playful dinosaurs into traditional Japanese patterns. The bowl is made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramics region. Pair it with the Edokko Dinosaur mame plates for soy sauce, toppings and sides.

Product Features:

  • Hidden dinosaur design: three different dinosaurs are drawn into the blue underglaze scenes of pine, waves and landscape. Spotting them all is half the fun.
  • Ko-Imari style pattern: blue and white panels alternate with red lattice and floral panels, inspired by the richly decorated Imari porcelain of the Edo period.
  • Elegant inside too: a blue scrolling vine border circles the inner rim, finished with a fine brown rim line.
  • Flared sori-don shape: the wide, cone-shaped bowl is a modern ramen bowl silhouette that shows off the noodles and toppings and is easy to eat from.
  • Generous 1100mL capacity: sized for a full bowl of ramen, udon or soba, as well as rice-bowl dishes like tendon, katsudon and kaisendon.
  • More than noodles: just as good for a big salad, poke bowl, cereal or a shared serve of fruit.
  • Loved by adults and kids: traditional enough for the dinner table, fun enough for young dinosaur fans. A memorable gift for ramen lovers.
  • Easy care: smooth, glossy porcelain that is dishwasher safe and suitable for microwave warming.

  • Colours may vary slightly from the images due to lighting and screen settings. Food, chopsticks and props are not included. Other Edokko Dinosaur pieces shown are sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sori-don bowl?

Sori-don (反丼) means a flared donburi. Instead of rounded sides, the walls open out in a straight cone from a narrow foot. This shape is popular in Japanese ramen shops because it shows off the noodles and toppings, holds plenty of broth and cools the top layer slightly so it is easier to eat.

What is Ko-Imari style?

Ko-Imari (古伊万里, "old Imari") refers to porcelain made around Arita in the Edo period and shipped from the port of Imari. It is known for underglaze blue painting combined with red and other overglaze colours, often arranged in panels. "Ko-Imari style" means the design is inspired by these antique pieces.

What is Mino ware?

Mino ware (Mino-yaki, 美濃焼) is pottery and porcelain made in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. With more than 1,300 years of history, it is Japan's largest ceramics-producing area and is known for practical, well-made tableware in a wide variety of styles.

Is 1100mL big enough for a full bowl of ramen?

Yes. 1100mL is measured to the brim, so a full serve of noodles, broth and toppings sits comfortably below the rim. It is a similar size to the bowls used in many Japanese ramen shops, and works just as well for udon, soba and donburi.
