A Tiny Imari-Style Plate With Stegosauruses Hiding in the Pattern
At first glance it is a classic Japanese mame plate in rich indigo and red, the look of antique Imari porcelain. Look closer and three little stegosauruses are circling the peony at its centre. This is Kenryu (剣竜), one of the Edokko Dinosaur (江戸っ子恐竜) mame plates from Awasaka, a range that tucks playful dinosaurs into traditional Japanese patterns. Each plate is made in Mino, Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramics region. Collect the other Edokko Dinosaur mame plates to build a set where every dish has a different dinosaur.
Product Features:
- Hidden stegosaurus design: three stegosauruses, their backs lined with plates, sit in white panels around a blue peony and scroll medallion.
- Imari-inspired colours: deep indigo blue with red floral roundels and red scrolling flowers, inspired by antique Japanese Imari porcelain, finished with a dark brown rim line.
- Mame plate size: at 9cm across, it is the classic Japanese mamezara for soy sauce, wasabi, pickles, dipping sauces, a single wagashi or a few chocolates.
- Collectible series: every Edokko Dinosaur mame plate is the same size with a different dinosaur and pattern, from Mt Fuji to ocean waves, so they mix and match on the table.
- Handy beyond the table: a neat tray for rings, earrings, tea bags or a spoon rest.
- Loved by adults and kids: refined enough for a Japanese dinner setting, fun enough for young dinosaur fans.
- Easy care: dishwasher safe and suitable for microwave reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mame plate?
A mame plate (mamezara, 豆皿) is a very small Japanese dish, usually around 7 to 10cm wide. "Mame" means bean, a nod to its tiny size. Mame plates hold soy sauce, condiments, pickles and sweets, and many people collect them for their endless variety of patterns.
What is Mino ware?
Mino ware (Mino-yaki, 美濃焼) is pottery and porcelain made in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. With more than 1,300 years of history, it is Japan's largest ceramics-producing area and is known for practical, well-made tableware in a wide variety of styles.
Why is it called Kenryu?
Kenryu (剣竜) is the Japanese name for the stegosaurus. It literally means "sword dinosaur", a reference to the sharp plates along its back. In Japanese, "ryu" (竜) is used in dinosaur names, so every design in the Edokko Dinosaur range carries a "ryu" name.
Does it make a good gift?
Yes. It is a small, affordable Made in Japan gift for dinosaur fans, Japanese food lovers and plate collectors. Pair two or more different designs for a fun set, or add one to a larger Japanese tableware gift.
